This is the story of a woman whose suffering at the hands of one man unleashes a desire for revenge against an entire gender; of a young man who rises from apprentice blacksmith to London gentleman; and of his fateful obsession with a seemingly untouchable woman. But more than that, it is a story of conflict and change. Pip's wealthy benefactor, Estella's father and Miss Havisham's former fiancé - turns out to be a convict. In a world where people's fates are based on something as loose as conspiracies, accidents and random acts of kindness, the influence of the criminal underclass is never far away.

"Christmas is nothing but fraud and sham." So says Ebenezer Scrooge (played by Michael Hordern), a miser whose financial success has turned him into a bitter and lonely man. But on Christmas Eve he is visited by the "Christmas Spirit", who shows him the Christmas Eves of the past, as well as the Christmas Eves of the present and the future. In the end he learns to open his heart to the goodness of Christmas and rediscovers the joy of having family and friends.
Since A Christmas Carol was first published in 1843, the name Ebenezer Scrooge has become famous all over the world and has gone down in English history as a significant miser. The film is shot in foggy and icy Victorian London and tells the message of the original story. It uses first-class actors and Dickens' own dialogue - this is kept as close to the original text as possible.
